Brother Alexander McKenzie Sloan
Lodge Clyde, Glasgow, No. 408

The Provincial Grand Master, his Commissioned and Elected Office Bearers and Stewards extend their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Brother Sloan who passed away on 18 February 2018.

Brother Sloan was Lodge Clyde's oldest member having celebrated his 100th birthday on 29 November 2017. He was initiated into Lodge Clyde in 1947 shortly after the end of his service in the Royal Navy.

Brother Sloan spent all of his war service as a Royal Navy sailor (Leading Seaman Gun Layer, DEMS 1940 - 45) on the Arctic Convoy escort ships. He was awarded the Arctic Star medal which was issued in 2012 to acknowledge the terrible conditions endured by those who served on the convoys and recognise their service and bravery. He also received a letter of thanks on behalf of the Russian People from President Putin.

This fine old gentleman was truly an unsung hero.

Just after Brother Sloan’s centenary, Brother Dick Bruce visited and passed on congratulations and best wishes from all at Lodge Clyde. He described him as a truly remarkable man who he was honoured and humbled to have met.

The photographs show Brother Sloan during his Naval service and also celebrating his 100th Birthday surrounded by his family.

Our sincere thanks go to his family for giving permission to share these photos.
